The dining hall at Niagara County Community College is under new management, and as a result, the dining hall will not be available to us on our originally scheduled date of Nov. 13.

As a result, we will be holding our season-ending banquet on Saturday, November 12.

The banquet will be held in the 2nd floor Cafeteria starting at 12:30 p.m., the same location and time as in years past. We apologize if the change in date causes any inconvenience.

Tickets for the banquet will be available the week of Oct. 24, and if you qualify, you may apply your service fee refund toward the price of your tickets.

The start of our 40th anniversary season is upon us, so I wanted to send you a note to help you better prepare.

Our first night of practice is Monday, August 1. We’ll have an orientation in the Starpoint High School Auditorium starting at 6 p.m., after which you’ll have an opportunity to meet with your child’s head coach and participate in a light workout.

You received an athlete’s medical information form at registration, which we need you to fill out and return the first night of practice. To participate in our program, your child will also need a note from a physician dated on or after June 1, 2011 that indicates he or she is fit to play. You may schedule a sports physical with your child’s doctor, or you may choose to have your child examined by Dr. William Baier or a female physician from his practice on Tuesday, August 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost for this physical is $2.00.

All cheerleaders will need to bring a birth certificate to the first week of practice, while only new football players are required to submit a birth certificate this year. Start digging through your file folders now!

We’re excited to announce that all four football teams will once again participate in two weekends of pre-season games in August. We will travel to Lewiston on August 20-21 for the Lew-Port Preseason Tournament, and we’ll be at the Lockport Alumni Bowl on Saturday, August 27. The regular season will kick off on Sunday, September 11; we’ll have a schedule to share with you in mid-August.

Our cheerleading squads will also be participating in competitions this year. Again, we’ll have more details once practice starts in August.

Get out and sell those raffle tickets! All tickets will be due in early August. Remember, each child must sell all 20 tickets, as this helps us keep our registration fees low.

And if your kids are like mine and have grown like weeds since last season, we’ll have information at the concession stand on CleatXchange, a local company that buys and sells football cleats. You can turn in your too-small cleats for cash and purchase new-to-you cleats. For more information, visit cleatxchange.com

All registration sessions are at the Starpoint High School Cafeteria. Football players and cheerleaders who have participated in PABA in previous years may register on Thursday, May 12 from 6-7:30 pm or on Saturday, May 14  from 10-11:30 am.

Players and cheerleaders new to PABA may register on Thursday, May 19 from 6-7:30 pm or on Saturday, May 21 from 10-11:30 am.

When does the season start?

Football and cheer practices begin on August 1st, and games/competitions will begin in early September.  Games and competitions end in early November

Why is registration held so early?

We hold registration in May so we can promote our football and cheer programs through the schools. It also gives us an opportunity to order the equipment and supplies we need before practice begins in August.

Where do you hold your practices?

All practices are held at Starpoint Central School.  Football players practice on the field behind the varsity baseball diamond, at the northwest corner of school property.  Cheerleaders practice outside near the varsity football field or inside one of the Starpoint gyms.

When are practices held?

Practices start in early August and are held at each coach’s discretion.

Football: Monday through Friday in August from 6:00-8:00 p.m, weather permitting.  When school starts, practices are cut back to four nights a week, Tuesday through Friday, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Given their ages, players on the Cubs typically practice three nights a week.

Cheer: Monday through Thursday in August from 6:00-8:00 p.m, weather permitting.  When school starts, practices are cut back to 2-3 nights a week from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Where do you play your games?

Home games are played on Starpoint’s football field, while away games are played against other NYFL teams through Niagara County and northern Erie County. Click here for a list of NYFL teams, and click here for a map of all NYFL field locations.

When are games played?

Home games are played on Sunday afternoons at Starpoint. Away games may be held on Friday night, anytime Saturday, or Sunday afternoon. Our cheerleaders participate in competitions held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons.

What are weight restrictions?

To keep the competition fair, football players must meet both age and weight limits as follows:

• Cubs must weigh 80 lbs or less and be 6 or 7 years old on July 31.
• Predators must weigh 100 lbs or less and be 9 years old or younger on July 31
• Cougars must weigh 120 lbs or less and be 11 years old or younger on July 31
• Lions must weigh 145 lbs or less and be 13 years old or younger on July 31

Football players may participate in practice if they are 15 lbs over the weight limit, but they may not participate in contact if they are 10 lbs or more. Any child over the weight limit can not play in a regular season or playoff game. Your child will be weighed at registration and throughout the season.

How are cheerleading teams determined?

Cheerleaders are placed on teams based on grade level, as follows:

• Predator cheerleaders must be entering 2nd or 3rd grade for the 2011-12 school year
• Cougar cheerleaders must be entering 4th or 5th grade for the 2011-12 school year
• Lions cheerleaders must be entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade for the 2011-12 school year

Do your cheerleaders participate in competitions?

Absolutely! Our cheerleaders have proudly represented Pendleton at the Peach Festival in Lewiston, the SubZero Cold Classic at Iroquois, the UB Spirit Challenge, and the Halloween Bash Cheer & Dance Competition at NCCC.

Why are there different registration dates for returning members & new members?

We accept a limited number of registrations for each team, and returning members receive first priority.

How much does it cost to participate?

• $50 registration fee for each youth
• $50 service fee per family, which will be refunded when your service commitment is fulfilled

Each youth is also responsible for selling $100 in raffle tickets. You will receive your raffle tickets at registration in May, and the funds & ticket stubs are due the first week of practice in August.

What is the service fee?

On game days, PABA needs volunteers serving customers in the concession stand and merchandise tent, setting up the field, selling 50/50 tickets, cleaning up after the game, and many other duties.  If you volunteer for an approved task, you receive a refund of your service fee.  You can see that the service fee is simply there to encourage you to volunteer.

What is the raffle?

PABA offers one of the lowest registration fees for football and cheerleading in Western New York.  To keep our registration fees low, we require each football player and cheerleader to sell $100 in raffle tickets.  You will receive your tickets when you register, and the money and completed ticket stubs are due the first week of practice in August.  All raffle money must be turned in for your child to receive his or her uniform and equipment.

What should I bring with me for registration?

All parents should bring the children registering for football or cheerleading, as well as cash or a check for payment. Parents registering first-time football players should also bring a copy of the birth certificate.

What will I have to buy?

For football players, PABA supplies helmets, jerseys and pants for games and practices, shoulder pads, thigh/knee/tailbone pads. Players must purchase their own cleats, athletic undergarments, mouthpieces and chinstraps.  Practice jerseys may be kept at the end of the season.

For cheerleaders, PABA supplies cheer uniforms, but cheerleaders must purchase apparel as follows:

• Cheer shoes ($33.00)
• Crop top ($17.00)
• Briefs  ($8.00)
• Hair bow ($8.00)
• Cheer socks ($5.00/pair)
• Personalized cheer jacket ($25.00). Required if cheerleader is new.  The total cost of the jacket is $50.00, and PABA subsidizes half the cost. If a replacement is needed, participants must pay the full $50.00.
• Optional: Soffe shorts ($9.00)

Cheerleading is open to all students in grades 2-8, while football is available to youths ages 6-13 as long as they meet league age and weight requirements.

Registration for returning members will be held in the Starpoint High School Cafeteria on Thursday, May 12 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 14 from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

New members may register on Thursday, May 19 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 21 from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Practices will begin on Monday, August 1, and games will be played through early November.

Each child must also participate in a PABA fundraiser. Details will be available at registration.

If you have fulfilled your volunteer service requirement, you may use your $50 credit towards the purchase of your tickets. If you only need one ticket, PABA will issue a check for the appropriate refund by the end of the year.

If you have not fulfilled your volunteer service requirement, tickets may be purchased by cash or check.

You must bring your ticket to be admitted to the Banquet!

Due to the limited number of seats, the banquet is strictly reserved for participants and their parents/guardians only. Brothers and sisters are not eligible to attend if they are not actively enrolled in our program.

Also remember that players and cheerleaders must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend our banquet.

If you cannot pick up your tickets on Sunday, you may pick them up at the concession stand next week from 6:00-7:30 p.m. during our regularly scheduled practices.

Niagara County Community College is located at 3111 Saunders Settlement Road in Sanborn. Parking is available around the back (north side) of NCCC near the student housing complex (Parking Lot 7 on this map), and our Banquet will be held on the second floor of the Student Center, Building G.

Doors will open at 12:30 pm, with the banquet to start by 1:15 pm. Dinner will be served by 2 pm, with the awards presentation to follow.

Also, please return the emergency forms and payment for our upcoming competitions ASAP if you have not already done so.

To make these games successful, we need assistance from our parents in many areas: coaching, concessions, medical support, merchandise sales, food preparation, set-up, clean-up, 50/50 raffle sales, scorekeeping and much more.

We have a specific need for concession stand volunteers at our final home games on Oct. 3 and Oct. 24. The concession stand is one of our top fundraisers, and the money we make there helps us keep your registration fees among the lowest anywhere in Western New York.

PABA is acknowledged as one of the classiest programs in local youth football, and it’s a tribute to all the volunteers who help us maintain our high standards. Be part of a proud tradition and sign up for a volunteer shift at the concession stand this week.
